Ky Carnell-Russell

Background

Ky Carnell-Russell is a pilates teacher trainer, PMA certified Pilates instructor, and ACE cedrtified personal trainer with advanced training and experience in pilates-based Movement Medicine and pre-post natal fitness. Ky offers wellness services including Pilates training for individuals and groups in downtown Santa Cruz or on-site locations, including corporate locations. She is also a Balanced Body faculty member, teaching Pilates instructor training and anatomy classes in Santa Cruz and across the nation.

Ky has taught Pilates full time since 2003, and received her certification from Nora St. John and Naomi Leiserson at Turning Point Studios. Ky worked for several years as a Dance Medicine Specialist at the world-renowned St. Francis Hospital’s Center for Sports and Dance Medicine after her experience as a patient there. Ky co-owned and directed a thriving Pilates studio in San Francisco for 4 years, and currently teaches Pilates in downtown Santa Cruz at Agile Monkey Pilates Studio. Ky is a faculty member of Balanced Body, a world leader in pilates instructor training education.  As a faculty member of Balanced Body, Ky teaches Pilates instructor training courses and Anatomy In 3D(tm) courses locally and across the country, including at Pilates On Tour conferences.  She is also a faculty member for the Center for Women's Fitness, teaching movement professionals how to safely empower women to fitness through all life stages, including pre and postnatal.

Ky has studied with numerous master pilates teachers and has received advanced certifications in Movement Medicine with Nora St. John; Postural and Movement Assessment and Therapeutic Application using the Pilates Method with Mercy Sidbury; and Core Beginnings with Marie Jose-Bloom Lawrence. She is constantly participating in numerous conferences and workshops with renowned instructors to further increase her knowledge in kinesiology and Pilates, including with first generation Pilates teachers Kathy Grant, Lolita San Miguel, and Ron Fletcher.

Ky has a passion for the intricate workings of the human body and has studied anatomy extensively. She studied experiential anatomy with clay by Zahourek Systems  and travels the country to teach a movment based anatomy in 3D course to Pilates teachers and students.

Ky blends her Pilates and anatomy knowledge with over 25 years of dance training and experience as a professional ballet dancer and teacher. She has also studied and performed in jazz, modern, tap dance, trapeze, and circus acrobatics.

In addition to her studies in Pilates and dance, Ky is currently pursuing her Master’s degree in Kinesiology at San Jose State University. Ky holds a Bachelor's degree in Conservation and Resource Studies with a minor in Education from U.C. Berkeley, and has experience in curriculum development and instruction in dance, environmental science and the arts. She has also designed and taught classes at U.C. Berkeley.
